Representatives from Sporting Clube de Portugal recently visited GPS headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts to discuss a partnership between Sporting and GPS sister organization Massachusetts Premier Soccer.
In town as part of The Lion’s historic game against Celtic F.C. at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, Sporting officials watched Mass Premier Soccer teams train and compete, as well as visiting the MPS full time office in Waltham. In the last twelve months MPS owners Peter and Joe Bradley have enjoyed similar visits to Sporting’s headquarters in Lisbon.
“It was a great pleasure for us to welcome the Sporting Club de Portugal representatives to the US to get an idea of the scope of the MPS organization,” said MPS DOC Peter Bradley. “Sporting is one of the leading youth development academies in Europe and their philosophy is a perfect match with MPS.”
Talks are at an advanced stage between the two which would see Sporting provide MPS with curriculum support, coaching exchanges between the two organizations and the potential opportunity for former Sporting professional trainees to compete for Mass Premier Soccer in the United States. Currently ranked in the top five development academies in the World by FIF, Sporting has also developed two FIFA World Footballers of the Year in the last ten years (Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo).
